A Visit to a Place of Historical Importance
Vising any historical place makes up familiar with our ancient heritage and cultural identity. I visited such as place few weeks back along with some of my close friends. It was the Buddhist vihara at Paharpur, Noagaon. It is located to the 200 kilometres northwest of Dhaka. We hired a microbus and started from our college for Pharpur at 6:00 am. The journey was very enjoyable. On the microbus, we took our breakfast. On reaching the spot, we took lunch in a local restaurant there. The food was very tasty and delicious. After having lunch, we started looking at the Buddhist Vihara which was founded in the 7th century by Dharma Paul. Recently, it has been declared a world heritage site for its universal artistic value. Also known as Somapur Mahavihara, it has been declared a world heritage site for its universal artistic value. Also known as Somapur Mahavihara, it is the largest single Buddhist monastery in the Indian sub-continent. There are 198 rooms (kuthri), inside the stone wall of the rooms three are 63 statues of Hindu and Buddhist deities. It is a square building including 117 residential rooms around. The Buddhist vihara bears our ancient religions and cultural heritage. The monastery city represents a unique artistic achievement of our ancient people. I came to learn that the place was ideally an intellectual centre from the 7th century up to the 17th century. My visit to this place opened my inner eyes and gave me an insight into our ancient heritage. I surveyed the whole area with a sense of awe and wonder. We started our return journey at 6:00pm and reached Dhaka at 10:30pm. It has been really a comfortable as well as enjoyable journey.
