A Little Learning is a Dangerous Thing

There lived a man in a village. He had a great attraction to English and so he went to a teacher. The teacher began to teach him but the man was dull headed and he did not learn but three words. These three words were ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘very good’. When the teacher realized that the man was not able to learn further, he stopped teaching him. Then the man returned to his native village. He felt proud of knowing English. He behaved as if he had a good command of English. Very often he used these three words. One day a thief stole a cow from his neighbour’s house in the village. Police came to investigate the incident. They asked many villagers about it. Finally, they asked the man about it. They asked him whether he had stolen the cow. Without understanding, he said ‘yes’. They again asked him whether he would mind anything or not if they took him to prison. He then replied ‘no’. Finally, the police caught him as a thief and the man said ‘very good’. Thus, telling English without understanding brought danger for him.

A Little Learning is a Dangerous Thing

There lived a man in a village. He had a great attraction for English and so he went to a teacher. The teacher began to teach him, but the man was dull-headed. After a long effort of the teacher, the man learnt only three words. They were ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘very good’. With these three words he came to his village. He began using these three English words most of the time irrelevantly. He did not think whether they were contextually right or wrong. He just used them everywhere. One night a theft was committed in the village. The following day the police came to the village and asked the man whether the knew about the theft. He answered in his usual way ‘Yes’. The police asked the man to tell them about the theft but the man said ‘No’. The they arrested him and told him to go to the police station with them. He just told them ‘very good’. Thus the man fell in danger.
