My Favourite Book
It's hard to imagine our lives without books. We learn a lot of interesting
things when we read books. Books are our great friends, teachers, and
advisers. They teach us how to take the next step when we are in a difficult
situation. They help to shape our lives. It is impossible to become an
educated person without books. Besides, books play an important role in
upbringing our feelings, views, and tastes; give us a lot of useful
information.
Frankly speaking, I'm not a bookworm but when I have spare time I read books
with great pleasure. I read only what I like very much. I like reading, for
example, the poems of Nazrul and Tagore, the short stories of Tolstoy, the
tales of Sherlock Holmes. And if I am asked to name one book as my favorite, I
would mention Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens.
Mr. Pickwick is the central character of the story. But in this book, the
story is rather unimportant. It is the detached incidents, that absorb my
interest. Mr. Pickwick with his three associates Messrs Tupma, Shod-grass, and
Winkle forms the Pickwick Club. The story revolves around these Pickwickians;
and how the PickwIckians meet with one experience after another and how they
behave and react keeps me eagerly expectant and often sets me laughing
boisterously. The characters are very likable sorts. Mr. Pickwick is genial
and good-natured and obliging. Mr. Wardle is generous and hospitable. Sam
Weller, Mr. Pickwick's devoted servant, with his peculiar articulation, is
also quite agreeable.
As the story draws to its end, everything is concluded to the satisfaction of
everybody. The conversations contained in the book are an example in
themselves, they illustrate what has been called Pickwickian humor in literary
language. For all this, 'Pickwick Papers' is my favorite book.
Whenever I am in low spirits or out of sorts I turn over some of the pages of
this book and feel quite right and fresh. I have read it many times. Every
time it gives me immense pleasure and new experiences. So this is my favorite
book above all other books. And I suppose similar feelings are cherished by a
thousand others who have gone through it. It must be their favorite book as
well.
Most teenagers have different opinions on reading. As for me, I think reading
is very important because books help to discover new things, to learn more
about life. Also, books tell us about the lives of famous people and other
interesting things. So we should read more and more books whenever we get
time.
