World Environment Day
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June by the United Nations. It has been celebrated since 1974 as a global program to reach out to the masses on several issues of environmental concern.
In the Scandinavian nation, Sweden in 1968 suggested to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that a UN conference be held focusing on the interference of humans with the environment. Following the proposal, ECOSOC passed resolution no 1346 in support of the idea.
The next year in 1968 the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 2398, in which it gave its consent to organize the proposed conference 1972. The conference was held in which the environmental issues were discussed and guidelines were issued to the concerned countries and organizations. Thus, beginning in 1974, World Environment Day is observed every year.
Each year World Environment Day is hosted in a different country, with events focusing on a central theme. In 1974, the city of Spokane in the United States played the host of the first-ever World Environment Day. Similarly many of the nations including, Australia, China, England, Pakistan, India, etc. have played host with different themes. World Environment Day 2021 was held in Pakistan, with 'ecosystem restoration' as the central theme.
Our environment is one of the most important aspects to survive on this planet. It is the only thing that can make life sustainable. Without it, we cannot survive even a single day. The main purpose of celebrating this day was to spread awareness. The awareness was about the conservation of our environment.
We will not have food and water to survive. And this will also be possible because of the imbalance of heat and atmospheric pressure. It is important that we should take care of the environment. Abandon all the exploitation that we are causing.
Global warming is the root cause of the ruin of our environment. It is our duty to protect our environment. We should stop all the exploitation that is destroying it. It is our basic need for our survival and our generations ahead.
On World Environment Day, we all take a day off from our work. And join various campaigns to spread awareness about environmental protection. We all plant small saplings in barren land so that they may grow and flourish in the land area after some years. We take part in various processions to make people aware of this day. So, they may also take part in protecting our environment.
The teachers should teach the students the methods to plant a tree. The school provides buses to take the students to the jungles. There they come to know about the different types of plants. The types of vegetation in which they survive. The students have to bring a sapling from their homes and plant them inside the ground. This helps them in getting practical knowledge. It also creates an emotional attachment to the environment.
Disease like lung cancer is affecting even the minors. It is a major threat to the people living in urban areas. To reduce the risk of air pollution China is establishing various air purifiers in their ecosystem. With the help of these people are at least getting pollution-free air to breathe.
It is also taking mandatory measures like population reduction, banning the use of plastic, and planting trees in every community. This can help to avert the ruining of the environment caused in the past years.
World Environment Day is an important global event that is the United Nation’s front-end program to raise awareness on human interference in the environment. Many countries actively participate in the events, reaffirming their dedication towards environmental causes. It is very important that World Environment Day be observed without fail, including more and more member countries, to raise global awareness for environmental protection.
