A Poison Tree
William Blake
I was angry with my friend;
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe;
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I waterd it in fears.
Night & morning with my tears
And I sunned it with smiles.
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night.
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine.
And he knew that it was mine.
And into my garden stole,
When the night had veild the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে রুষ্ট ছিলাম;
আমি আমার ক্রোধকে বললাম, আমার ক্রোধ নিঃশেষ হয়ে গেল।
আমি আমার শত্রুর প্রতি রুষ্ট ছিলাম;
আমি একে বলিনি, আমার ক্রোধ জেগে উঠল।
আমি আতঙ্কে একে জলসেচন করতে লাগলাম,
সকাল ও সন্ধ্যা আমার অশ্রু দিয়ে;
আর আমার হাসি দিয়ে একে তাপ দিতাম,
কোমল প্রতারণাপূর্ণ ছলনা দিয়ে
এটি জন্মাতো দিন ও রাত জুড়ে,
যতক্ষণ না এটি সোনালি আপেল ধারণ করত।
আর আমার শত্রু এর দ্যূতি দেখলো,
সে জানত যে এটি আমার
আর রাতে আমার বাগানে চুরি হতো
যখন রাত মেরুকে আচ্ছাদিত করত;
সকালে দেখে আমি খুশি হতাম
আমার শত্রুকে গাছের পাশে প্রসারিত দেখে।
The Theme : The Theme of this poem is that holding a grudge can be fatal to the self as well as the object of wrath. Also, remaining silent about out anger hinders personal and spiritual growth, making us bitter, and that a grudge left unchecked becomes dangerous, even murderous.
(এই কবিতার মর্মার্থ হলো, আক্রোশ পোষণ করা ক্রোধের বিষয়বস্তুর পাশাপাশি নিজের জন্যেও মারাত্মক হতে পারে। আবার, ক্রোধের ব্যাপারে আমাদের নিরবতা আমাদেরকে রুষ্ট করে ব্যক্তিকে ও আত্মিক বিকাশকে বাধাগ্রস্তই করে আর নিয়ন্ত্রণ না করা আক্রোশ বিপজ্জনক, এমনকি প্রাণঘাতি হয়ে যায়।)
