The City
Langston Hughes
In the morning the city
Spreads its wings
Making a song
In stone that sings.
In the evening the city
Goes to bed
Hanging lights
Above its head.
সকালে শহর
ডানা মেলে
গান গায়
সুরেলা শিলায়।
সন্ধ্যায় শহর
ঘুমোতে যায়
জ্বালিয়ে প্রদীপ
মাথার উপরে।
The Theme : Though the city people seem busy and hard-hearted, they are very soft and affectionate inside. There is also music and harmony in life but they cannot enjoy it as city life remains very busy twenty-four hours. Even the city people cannot enjoy a sound sleep at night. So city life is not appreciable.
(শহুরে লোকজনকে বাহ্যত ব্যস্ত ও কঠিন হৃদয়ের মনে হলেও ভেতরে তারা খুবই কোমল ও মমতাপূর্ণ। সেখানেও জীবনের সুর ও ছন্দ থাকে কিন্তু তারা এটা উপভোগ করতে পারে না কেননা শহুরে জীবন চব্বিশ ঘণ্টা অত্যন্ত ব্যস্ত থাকে। শহুরে লোকেরা রাতে ভালোমতো ঘুম উপভোগ করতে পারে না। তাই শহুরে জীবন প্রশংসনীয় নয়।)
