Time, You Old Gipsy Man

Time, you old gipsyman,
Will you not stay,
Put up your caravan
Just for one day?
All things I’ll give you
Will you be my guest,
Bells for your jennet
Of silver the best,
Goldsmiths shall beat you
A great golden ring,
Peacocks will bow to you,
Little boys sing,
Oh, and sweet girls will
Festoon you with may.
Time, you old gipsy,
Why hasten away?

সময়, বৃদ্ধ যাযাবর তুমি
থামাও না কাফেলা তোমার বল্লা টানি?
একটি দিনের তরে
আমার পর্ণ ফুটির দ্বোরে।
হবে কি তুমি অতিথি আমার
দেব আমি যা আছে দেবার
শ্রেষ্ঠ চাঁদির ঘণ্টা নেবে
স্প্যানিশ ঘোড়ার ঘাড়ে?
স্বর্ণকারে বানিয়ে দেবে
স্বর্ণাসরীয় তোরে।
নেবে তুমি, ময়ূরের অভিবাদন?
শুনবে শিশুর গান?
ও! মিষ্টি মেয়ের বাসন্তী সাজন
দেবে কি তুলির টান?
সময়, তুমি বৃদ্ধ ভবঘুরে
ত্বরায় কেন যাও গো দূরে?

The Theme : The poem deals with ‘hastiness of time’. The poem suggests that time does not wait for anybody for a single moment. The speaker offers time many attractive things but it does not heed to his offers. The speaker also relates transience of human life with time. The goes on and never comes back. In the same way, human life ends with its death and never comes back.

(কবিতাটি ‘সময়ের ব্যস্ততা’ সম্পর্কে আলোকপাত করে। কবিতাটি বলে যে সময় কারো জন্য এক মুহূর্তও অপেক্ষা করে না। বক্তা সময়কে অনেক আকর্ষণীয় জিনিস উপহার দেয়ার কথা বলেন কিন্তু এটা (সময়) তার যেসব উপহারের জিনিষগুলোর প্রতি আকর্ষণবোধ করে না। বক্তা সময়ের সাথে মানবজীবনের নশ্বরতা বা সংক্ষিপ্ততার তুলনাও করেন। সময় চলে যায় এবং কখনো ফিরে আসে না। একইভাবে, মৃত্যুর সাথে মানবজীবনের সমাপ্তি ঘটে এবং কখনো ফিরে আসে না।)
