Example is better than precept.
উপদেশ দেওয়ার চেয়ে দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করা বেশি ভালো।
Main Idea : Action or example is more important than words. We should prefer actions to advice.
Amplification : Life is a trouble. It is full of puzzles and uncertainties. We need advice and instructions from others lead life smoothly. We can learn anything concretely if we can understand examples rather than advice. It is better to show something in action than merely advising others. Examples touch our hearts easily. A man can be motivated easily by giving him examples. We are habituated to giving precept or advice to others but we are unwilling to follow these. But concrete examples become the limelight for us to understand anything. We should be an example for others before we give advice. If we speak against smoking but we don't stop smoking, it will be a mocking to others. So, we have to become examples by stopping smoking first. Thus, we can say that it is better to act as an example than to give advice.
বঙ্গানুবাদ
মূলভাব : কাজ বা দৃষ্টান্ত কথার চেয়ে অধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আমাদের উপদেশ অপেক্ষা কাজকে অধিকতর পছন্দ করা উচিত।
ভাবসম্প্রসারণ : জীবনটা একটা ঝঞ্ঝাট। এটি প্রহেলিকা ও অনিশ্চয়তায় ভরা। জীবন সুষ্ঠুভাবে যাপন করতে আমাদের অপরের পরামর্শ ও নির্দেশনা প্রয়োজন। যদি আমরা বুঝতে পারি উপদেশ দেওয়ার চেয়ে দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করা বেশি ভালো, তাহলে আমরা যেকোনো কিছু সুনির্দিষ্টভাবে বুঝতে পারবো। কেবল অপরকে উপদেশ দেওয়ার চেয়ে কাজে কিছু প্রদর্শন করা অধিকতর শ্রেয়। দৃষ্টান্ত আমাদের অন্তরকে সহজেই স্পর্শ করে। দৃষ্টান্ত প্রদর্শনের মাধ্যমে একজন মানুষকে সহজেই প্রণোদিত করা যেতে পারে। আমরা অন্যদের নীতিবাক্য শোনাতে ও উপদেশ দিতে অভ্যস্ত কিন্তু আমরা এগুলো অনুসরণ করতে অনিচ্ছুক। কিন্তু আমাদের জন্য কোনো কিছু বুঝতে সুনির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ প্রসিদ্ধি লাভ করতে পারে। আমাদের উপদেশ দেওয়ার পূর্বে আমাদের অপরের জন্য দৃষ্টান্ত হওয়া উচিত। যদি আমরা ধূমপানের বিরুদ্ধে কথা বলি, কিন্তু আমরা ধূমপান বন্ধ না করি, তাহলে এটি অপরের প্রতি তামাশা করা হবে। তাই প্রথমে ধূমপান বন্ধ করে আমাদের দৃষ্টান্ত হতে হবে। এভাবে আমরা বলতে পারি যে উপদেশ দেওয়ার চেয়ে দৃষ্টান্ত হিসেবে কাজ করা অধিকতর শ্রেয়।

This proverb means that concrete examples are better than abstract orders. Generally, we speak of many noble qualities. We may also tell people that they should acquire those qualities. But it may or may not have any effect. If man does not practice what he preaches, his precept will not carry weight.
On the contrary, a man who smokes constantly cannot tell others to abstain from smoking. Besides, a man who habitually tells a lie has no right to advise others to speak the truth. Thus an example is more effective than thousands of words of advice.
