The Fly
William Blake (1757 – 1827)
Little Fly
Thy summer’s play,
My thoughtless hand
Has brush’d away.
Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?
For I dance
And drink & sing;
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.
If thought is life
And strength & breath;
And the want
Of thought is death;
Then am I
A happy fly.
If I live,
Or if I die.
ছোট্ট পতঙ্গ,
তোমার গ্রীষ্মের খেলা,
আমার অবিবেচক হাত
শেষ করে দিয়েছে।
আমি কি
তোমার মতো পতঙ্গ নই?
তোমার বৈশিষ্ট্যও কী
আমার মতন না?
আমি নাচি
পান করি, আর গাই,
যতক্ষণ না কিছু অন্ধ হাত আমার পাখা ভেঙে দেয়।
যদি চিন্তাই জীবন হয়
আর শক্তি এবং শ্বাস
তবে ভাবনার
অভাবই মৃত্যু;
তাহলে আমি
এক সুখী পতঙ্গ,
যদি বেঁচে থাকি,
অথবা মরে যাই।
The Theme : Life is characterized by the capacity to think as well as breathe and an inability to think is death. And there is no difference between a man and an insect as the lifespan of both of them is very short. So the transitory life of human beings would be happy if it is full of activities.
(শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাসের ক্ষমতার পাশাপাশি চিন্তার সক্ষমতাও জীবনের বৈশিষ্ট্য আর চিন্তার অক্ষমতা হলো মৃত্যু। আর মানুষ ও পতঙ্গের মধ্যে কোন তফাত নেই কেননা উভয়েরই আয়ু খুবই সংক্ষিপ্ত। তাই মানুষের ক্ষণস্থায়ী জীবন সুখময় হতে পারে যদি এটা কর্মময় হয়।)
