The Sick Rose
William Blake (1757 – 1827)
O Rose thou art sick.
The invisible worm,
The flies in the night
In the howling storm;
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy;
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.
ও গোলাপ, তোমার রূপ শীর্ণ।
অদৃশ্য কীট
যেটি বিচরণ করে রাতে,
গর্জনশীল ঝঞ্জায়;
খুঁজে পেয়েছ তোমার শয্যা
রক্তাক্ত আনন্দের;
আর তার তমসাচ্চন্ন গুপ্ত ভালোবাসা
তোমার জীবনকে করেছে ধ্বংস।
The Theme : In the poem the rose and worm have been considered by critics as “figures of humanity”, although many critics doubt the direct equivalence of Man as a worm. When Blake makes this comparison in other places, he is explicit about it. Nevertheless, the “lesson of the worm” may be applicable to human experience.
