Life is short but art is long
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter, therefore, yet soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but more endeared,
Pipe to the sprit ditties of no tone;
Fair youth, beneath the tree, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold lover, never, never, canst kiss.
Though winning near the goal,-yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bless.
For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
শ্রুত গান মিষ্টি, কিন্তু অশ্রুতগুলো
বেশি মিষ্টি, তাই, এ কোমল বাঁশি, বেঁজে যায়;
সাধারণ কর্ণের জন্য নয়; বরং অধিক প্রিয়।
বিনা সুরে সরল কোনো গান বেজে চলে;
গাছের নিচে সুন্দর যৌবন, তোমরা পারবে না বন্ধ করতে
তোমাদের গান, না ঐ গাছগুলো হবে কখনো পত্রশূন্য;
সাহসী প্রেমিক, পারবে না কখনো কখনো চুমু দিতে।
যদিও খুবই কাছাকাছি- তবুও পারবে না কোনো কষ্ট দিতে
সে কখনো মলিন হবে না, যদিও তোমার সে ভাগ্য নেই,
চিরদিন তোমার ভালোবাসায়, আর সে সুন্দর!
The Theme : ‘Life is short but art is long’ is the central theme of the above poem. The poem suggests that painted images are ever-green and everlasting than human life. In the poem, the poet implies that the unheard music from the painted pipe is sweeter than heard music from real pipe. Besides, the painted trees, painted lovers are ever-green on the urn.
