you in the meeting I'll stick up for you.
Stone deaf (পূর্ণতঃ কালা/ শ্রবণশক্তিহীন) – My
grandmother was already hard of hearing
but, of late, she has become stone deaf.
Stone's throw (অল্প দূরত্বে) – The railway station
is just at'a stone's throw from our house.
Strain every nerve (অত্যধিক চেষ্টা করা) – Although
he strained every nerve to audience's attention nobody listened to him.

ideas are too liberal for a strait-lace person like his father.

(বিনা প্রস্তুতিতে হঠাৎই ভাষণ দেওয়া) – Although he spoke
extempore it was a fine speech.
Speak for itself (নিজে থেকে বলা) – I am not
exaggerating by praising him. His work speaks for itself.
Speak for one (কারও পক্ষে বলা) – As he was too shy
to put forward his case had to speak for him.
Speak of one in high terms
(অত্যন্ত প্রশংসা করা) – You speak of him in high terms. But
does he deserve so much praise?
Speak one's mind (স্পষ্ট করে বলা) – Since you have
asked for my candid opinion, I shall speak my mind.
Speak volumes (ভালভাবে প্রমাণ করা) – It speaks
volumes for her love for him that she left her home to marry him.
Speak well for (উত্তমতা প্রকাশ পাওয়া) – The neatness

Summer friends (সুসময়ের বন্ধু) – Summer friends are
not real friends.
Swan song (কবির শেষ রচনা) – "The Tempest" is the
swan song of Shakespeare.
Swim with the tide (সংখ্যাগুরুর দিকে যাওয়া) – He is
so clever that he always swims With the tide
Swallow the bait (টোপ গিলা) – Election time promises
are made to catch votes and many illiterate and ignorant men swallow the
bait.

পাশে না গিয়ে নিরপেক্ষ অবস্থানে থাকা। বাস্তবে আমাদের চারপাশে এমন অনেক মানুষ
আছে যারা বিপদে এদিক ওদিক না থেকে নিরপেক্ষ থাকে। এই phrase টির আরো কিছু
সমার্থক হল: To be impartial, To remain neutral, Remain neutral in dispute
ইত্যাদি।
Sine die – অনির্দিষ্ট কাল, অনির্দিষ্ট সময়ের জন্যে কোনো কাজ/ সভা/
সংসদ/ ব্যবসা ইত্যাদি বন্ধ থাকা। Uncertain period, Adjourned indefinitely,
Indefinite period, Uncertain ইত্যাদি।
A snake in the grass – ঘাস মানুষকে বসার সুন্দর জায়গা দেয়
কিন্তু ঘাসের মধ্যে সাপ থাকলে তা মানুষকে কামড় দিয়ে মানুষের ক্ষতি করে থাকে।
একরকম রূপে আপনার অনেক বন্ধু আছে যারা আপনার ক্ষতি করতে পারে বা চায়। এরূপ
অর্থে phrase টির ভাবার্থ: লুকানো শত্রু, বন্ধুবেশে শত্রু, গুপ্ত শত্রু, Hidden
enemy ইত্যাদি।

Seventh heaven – In a state of supreme happiness.
Silver lining – Hope / আশা।
Sine die – অনির্দিষ্ট কাল/সময়। Uncertain period.
Skim through – ভাসা ভাসা পড়া।

Straw for – কারো পক্ষ নেওয়া।
